I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest service valve or at the mains tap outside. If you can’t locate the main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that is sorted, give us a ring, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be there promptly to get things sorted.

While you are waiting, remove any significant possessions from the area, and mop up any water or position a bucket to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
