I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating valve below or beside the cistern. If you can’t find a tap, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains water isolating valve to stop all water to your residence.

Once that’s sorted, give us a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be with you rapidly to resolve the problem.

In the meantime, start wiping up any water, put a bucket to catch drips, and remove significant possessions from the affected area. If the mains water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
